The TIME 4 Real Science Program relies on annual support from Transylvania County Schools, grant funding agencies and community organizations and individuals. No amount is too small!
In memory of Kris Petterson: In the fall of 2021, we were devastated to lose one of our amazing TIME alumni. Kris was a part of our first school day research course at BHS in 2011-2012 where she worked with Meredith Tooley and Erika Williams on the project: Isolation, Identification and Characterization of Endophytes from Cherokee Medicinal Plants: Yellow Root (Xanthorhiza simplicissima), Downy Rattlesnake Plantain (Goodyera pubescens), and Indian Tobacco (Lobelia inflata), which earned the students top awards at the American Junior Academy of Science and the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). Her team received the “Most Outstanding Project in Microbiology” award from the American Society for Microbiology at ISEF. A beautiful soul, Kris graduated from BHS and the TIME program in 2013. She went on to study plant molecular biology at NC State University and was on track to earn a PhD in Plant & Microbial Ecology from Texas Tech University. Kris’s family has requested that donations be made in her name to the TIME 4 Real Science program. Hear from Kris in this 2015 video the impact that the TIME program had on her. TIME program years 2017 – present were funded by community donations and the efforts of student grant writers Bain Brown, Emily Trusler, Chase Bishop, Isaiah Lefler, Ada Weaver, and Ben Caroway.
The 2016-17 program year was largely funded by donations to a student-led fundraising campaign. A BIG THANK YOU to TIME graduate Abby Williams and donors from across Transylvania County, North Carolina, the United States and the world! $11,255 was raised to help make the 2016-17 program year possible!
